100% American Grown on Our Farm
NOW is the time to make sure your spring gardens will
always be alive with bright early blooming DAFFODILS!!!!
EVERY YEAR for now on. You plant only once!!!
1) The Original Bright Yellow Daffodil, the "Wordsworth Daffodil"
(species name: Narcissus Pseudonarcissus) also called "Lent Lilly"
Natural Species Daffodils are the most hardy, and Pseudonarcissus,
what we call "Wordsworth" is the most hardy of all.
Even when faced with total neglect and abuse, Wordsworth will
outlive you, your garden and your house. It is the daffodil about
which Wordsworth wrote two hundred years ago in his famous poem:
"I never saw daffodils so beautiful. They grew among the mossy stones about and about them, some
rested their heads upon these stones as on a pillow for weariness and the rest tossed and reeled and
danced and seemed as if they verily laughed with the wind that blew upon them over the lake, they looked
so gay ever dancing ever changing." William Wordsworth, 1804
And, they will dance for you in your gardens to announce the end of winter every spring for now on,
guaranteed. You need plant only once and watch the number of blossoms increase each year!
2) Stella or "John's Old Fashioned", sometimes mistakenly called Sir
Watkin. Odds are that if a daffodil survives 100 years after planted,
chances are that if you see spring daffodils blooming where a house once
stood, that daffodil is either the "Wordsworth Daffodil" above,
Campernelle or Stella.
If you want an elegant daffodil that will last forever, even with total
neglect, Stella is your daffodil. Stella blooms later than Wordsworth.
3) Campernelle was also inspired by Nature, not a daffodil breeder. And,
it has the nicest scent of any spring daffodil. It's been used for making
perfumes. Like all daffodils at American Daffodil Farm, Campernelle is a
true survivor.
Because the true Campernelle multiplies slowly, growers in Holland can't
make enough money from this elegant flower. As a result, it's rare, and
expensive when located. That's also the reason we must charge more for
this charming very early blooming daffodil.
4) Butter n Eggs Named for the white and yellow in its blossom, Butter
n Eggs is a decendant of Stella, blooms at the same time and also lasts
forever. A favorite of many of our great grandparents, but, the stems of
Butter n Eggs are not strong enough to support the heavy bloom when it
rains. Therefore, we suggest growing several of these intriguing
daffodils for pleasantly mild aromatic indoor displays as photographed.
5) Twin Sisters, named because most stems have two blossoms, is
another wild daffodil species, N. × Medioluteus, but, sometimes they have
3 or more. The flower in the photo is unusual because it has 6 blossoms
on a single stem. This is the last daffodil to bloom each year. Several in
a vase will nicely perfume a small room. If you're looking to make a
splashy show in your garden, Twin Sisters isn't the flower you want.
However, every garden should have a few to preserve the heritage of this
ancient survivor, one of the most hardy plants of all.
6) Van Sion,or Telamonius Plenus, is a double daffodil variety that's been in
gardens since the early 1600's. Although this is one of the most hardy of
daffodils and a rapid multiplier, oftentimes the blossoms have as much green
as yellow. The bloom in the photograph is unusually bright for a Van Sion.
Our daffodil bulb drying and storage facility keeps bulbs dry and
healthy. Therefore, it's recommended that we hold the bulbs
until you're ready to plant in September and October. However,
to make sure you get your bulbs this year, order now! It is too
late for us to dig your bulbs from our gardens when it is time to
plant!! The bulbs must be dug in July. To make sure you have
bulbs to plant in the fall, order now.
